Let me introduce myself. My name is Gemma Gubb and I have been appointed as the Arts Engagement & Outreach Officer based at the Octagon Theatre.

I am responsible for the strategic development and delivery of the learning and participation programme delivered within the South Somerset area. That basically means coming up with creative ideas about how we can benefit the local community through engagement with the Arts.

A bit about me – Almost 20 years ago I trained as a dancer at the Laban Centre London. I then went on to work professionally as a dancer but pretty quickly found a love for teaching dance. I began as a free-lance dance teacher working across the South West and then was lucky enough to secure a job as dance teacher at Westfield Academy in Yeovil. I have been working as a dance teacher at Westfield Academy for the past 10 years and can say in confidence, that teaching dance to a diverse spectrum of learners is both a pleasure and privilege. Every day is a different challenge – which is what I love about the job.

So here I am at the Octagon Theatre! How exciting! My mission is to work closely with local Schools, Colleges, Arts Organisations, Arts Groups and Community Groups to create more opportunities for people to participate and engage with the creative arts. My aim is to collaborate with the community to create projects which celebrate the vibrant cultural life of South Somerset. As Arts Engagement & Outreach Officer, here are just some of the areas I will be involved with;

  • Providing opportunities for the community to experience and take part in world class Performing Arts
  • Providing opportunities for the community to develop practical skills within the Arts
  • Providing opportunities for the community to develop life skills & raise aspirations
  • Supporting healthy physical and mental wellbeing within the community
  • Encourage community engagement with the Arts through clubs/groups
  • Providing opportunities for the community to work with professional practitioners
  • Supporting artists, arts organisation and arts events across South Somerset providing advice and support.
  • Programming the Octagon gallery

And that’s just for starters, the list goes on! In general, it is my job to create opportunities for the local community to experience the Arts.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss possible engagement project ideas. I look forward to sharing ideas with you.
