NURSE NELLIE SAVES PANTO!

posted 24 Sep 2020

An Octagon Panto This Christmas? Oh Yes There Is!

Is there a panto this year? Oh Yes There is!

We are delighted to announce that ‘Nurse Nellie’ will ‘Save Panto’ this Christmas at The Octagon Theatre. Sadly, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the planned production of ‘Dick Whittington’ has been postponed to 2021/22 and in its place will be a very special, brand new, pantomime written especially for The Octagon Theatre.

Theatre Manager, Adam Burgan explained “Theatres throughout the country continue to be significantly impacted by the pandemic and with social distancing measures required for audiences and backstage it simply isn’t safe or possible to stage our normal pantomime production. Dick Whittington is a huge, spectacular, with a large cast and when we looked at tailoring the production to work with the current restrictions we felt we would be making too many compromises and have decided to postpone the show until next year so that audiences can enjoy it with the full experience and production we intended. Christmas at The Octagon would not be complete without pantomime – it is our biggest production of the year and we didn’t want to let our audience down. So, I am delighted that we will be staging a fantastic show – Nurse Nellie Saves Panto! That can be staged and enjoyed safely.”

Last year 30,000 people came to see ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ at The Octagon Theatre, making it one of the most popular pantomimes in the South West. Regular panto stars Gordon Cooper, Jack Glanville and Thom Ford will be returning to star in the 70-minute extravaganza that will feature all the classic panto moments including musical numbers; the cart routine; and, of course, the famous ghost gag bench(‘well, we’ll have to do it again then, won’t we?!’).

Social distancing and safety measures will be in place throughout the theatre and there will be 53 performances running from Friday 11th December until Sunday 3rd January.

Nurse Nellie Saves Panto! will be a show unlike any other during a time that none of us thought we would experience. It will certainly be one that audiences will remember forever. The safety of our audiences, cast and staff remain paramount and we know people have been missing the joy of live theatre and having something to look forward to where they can escape and celebrate Christmas with the Great British tradition of pantomime. It is essential to support the theatre and we cannot wait to share this show with audiences.

There will be a reduced audience capacity at The Octagon Theatre and the show will not have an interval to reduce congestion in the front of house areas.

Panto producer and Writer, Paul Hendy said “We are absolutely delighted to be able to present a pop-up panto at the Octagon.  I’m sure everyone will agree that 2020 has been a terrible year so to have the sheer joy of pantomime at the end of it will be the perfect antidote.  We’re looking forward to seeing you there! The story I have written tells of a baddie who steals the joy of pantomime, will Nurse Nellie and her friends manage to rescue it?  Oh yes they will!”

Tickets for ‘Dick Whittington’ have automatically been transferred to the equivalent date next year and tickets for ‘Nurse Nellie Saves Panto!’ are now on sale.
