Pinocchio comes to town this February!

One for the family this February is Pinocchio which comes to The Octagon Theatre on Sunday 6th for two hour-long shows at 1pm and 4pm.

Based in Bridport, Stuff & Nonsense Theatre Company bring their brilliant production of Pinocchio, which presents the classic elements of this popular tale but adds their hallmark hilarity, clearness, puppetry, music, fantastic staging, outstanding performers and extraordinary physical tricks in which is billed as their most ambitious production to date.

Best known as the 1940 Disney animated film, the original novel for children titled The Adventures of Pinocchio was published in 1883, written by Carlo Collodi. The story sees an old Italian woodcarver called Geppetto carve a wooden puppet named Pinocchio. The puppet gains wisdom through a series of misadventures which lead him to becoming a real human as reward for his good deeds. The novel is the most translated Italian book (excluding religious works), and Pinocchio has become a cultural icon recognised across the world.

Pinocchio is Stuff and Nonsense’s brand-new show that is a charming and family friendly and is also written and directed by Niki McCretton who is their Artistic Director. It was created in 2021, following research and development in 2020 which involved dozens of children and young people.  As with any Stuff & Nonsense show, this performance features delightful puppets and exciting physical performances, specially commissioned music and song, cleverly adaptable staging, comedy relevant to all ages and plenty of audience participation. This time the company have increased their usual cast of two to have three versatile and experienced performers who specialise in family theatre. Audiences are always amazed to find out there are only two performers in their shows, as they each play many different characters and operate numerous puppets. Pinocchio began touring in Autumn 2021 following its premiere at Lighthouse, Poole, 2 October 2021. The show follows in the footsteps of the company’s previous successes: ‘The Gingerbread Man’, ‘The Man Who Wanted to be a Penguin’, ‘The Little Red Hen’, ‘The Enormous Turnip’, ‘3 Little Pigs’, ‘Goldilocks and the 3 Bears’, ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’, ‘Puppet Panto’ and ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’.

Founded in 2001, Stuff & Nonsense are one of the UK’s leading Family Theatre companies with 20 years’ experience in creating high quality productions. They have a real passion about children’s creativity and work with incredible artists to make outstanding theatre that excites children and enables adults to become seriously playful. Since 2010 the company have delivered approximately 2,200 performances of their ten original artist-led productions to over 300,000 people. Pinocchio is a co-production with Theatre Royal Plymouth, supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, with additional support from Lighthouse, Poole, The Point, Eastleigh and The Lyric, Bridport.
