The Transports - A Tale of Exile and Migration

TICKETS:* £19.50

Join some of Britain’s leading folk musicians for a timely re-telling of Peter Bellamy’s legendary folk ballads The Transports. Here is a rare chance to see BBC Award Winners The Young'uns, Faustus, Nancy Kerr, Rachael McShane and Greg Russell together on stage.

Storyteller Matthew Crampton presents fresh narration for the show, amplifying its central tale into a broader exploration of exile and migration. New musical arrangements have come from Paul Sartin of Bellowhead and Faustus.

After a sell-out tour in 2017, The Transports tours Britain again in January 2018 – and we’re delighted to bring the show to The Octagon Theatre.

The Transports tells the incredible tale of families destroyed by poverty and crime, but resurrected by exile to Australia in the 1780s. With fresh script and musical arrangement, these famous songs by Peter Bellamy re-emerge within a modern context of mass migration.

Stunning…truly a transport of delight” ★★★★★ Alfred Hickling, The Guardian

an ensemble success….ten voices uniting in magnificently lusty, rousing chorus” ★★★★ Rob Adams, The Herald

For the Parallel Lives project, the creative team behind The Transports is working with refugee and migrant organisations in each town the show visits. The project contrasts the lives of those forced to leave Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries with those who have recently arrived. In Yeovil we’re delighted to be partnering Sherborne Area Refugee Support and Refugee Aid from Taunton RAFT.

Mass migration is a defining dilemma of today. There’s seldom been a more vital moment to bring back The Transports – not just a great music experience, but a sharp reminder of folk music’s power in portraying the way the world actually works.
