At 7 I started dancing at a local dance school in Yeovil, it was here that I was first mesmerised by the whole concept of Ballet: the music, the movement and the costumes. From then on I would continually be prancing and pirouetting around the kitchen, the garden and the local supermarket – which hasn’t stopped yet!
The most significant moment in securing my love of dance was seeing a touring dance company perform a rendition of the Pineapple Poll here at The Octagon Theatre. It was then that my fate was sealed; I would forever be a dance fanatic.
Coming up at The Octagon Theatre we have two fantastic touring dance companies visiting Yeovil; Ballet Central 24th May 2017 and the Jazz Dance Company 13th June 2017. Both comprised of graduate students having completed three years at vocational dance training hoping to launch their professional careers with these touring shows around the country.
Two of the top Vocational Dance Schools in London, The Central School of Ballet (Ballet Central) and London Studio Centre (Jazz Dance Company) have put together shows with performers who are expected to be the next big talent in musicals and dance shows on the West End stage.
Ballet Central has produced a showcase of many classical ballet scenes combined with new creations by contemporary choreographers under the New Artistic Director Christopher Marney. A sequence I am particularly looking forward to is a new version of the classic ballet Romeo and Juliet’s Ballroom Scene, choreographed by former English National Ballet’s Jenna Lee; a brilliant young choreographer and a judge on BBC’s Young Dancer Awards.
Other pieces include works by the master storyteller Sir Matthew Bourne and a specially created piece by Christopher Bruce, Petipa’s La Bayadere and The Nutcracker and newer works such as Indigo Children by The Royal Ballet artist in residence Liam Scarlett – all of which all promises to provide a spectacular show of brilliant dance choreographed by some of the top names in the dance world.
If you are a fan of various styles of dance and musical theatre Jazz Dance Company’s Dynasties: The Sands of Time is for you. Here we see a fabulous dance company create a production which takes you through a history of time with stories of powerful families and ancient history and interpreted through many different dance styles, including Commercial, Hip Hop, Jazz and Musical Theatre under the direction of Robbie O’Reilly. A wealth of choreographers have put together these dance sequences including leading stage and screen choreographers like Ryan Francois (Strictly Come Dancing, So You Think You Can Dance).
Both shows promise to be inspiring and innovative performances, showcasing the graduating dance talent of tomorrow.
