Arts Engagement & Outreach: September News
Here’s a taste of what our Arts Engagement & Outreach team at The Octagon & Westlands have been busy working on this month…
Our Arts Engagement & Outreach team develop and deliver programmes and activities that benefit health and wellbeing, enrich learning and education in and outside school, inspire and celebrate talent. Creating work that will support local artists and tell “local stories”. In everything we do and programme we will seek to improve inclusion and remove barriers, whatever they may be, so that everyone is able to enjoy and benefit from the creative arts. Our Arts Engagement & Outreach team look to provide more opportunities for our communities to watch, take part and benefit from arts and cultural activities where they live.
September has been alive with creativity, enrichment and connection, from supporting community events, to empowering teachers, developing talent and bringing people together through the creative arts. This month also saw the launch of our research project with the University of the West of England (UWE), to support the evaluation of our Creative Learning & Education programme with primary and secondary schools in Somerset. Supporting Community Connection
This month, our team proudly participated in two vibrant local events: Super Saturday in Yeovil and Birchfield Fun Day—bringing creativity, conversation and connection to over 300 community members. We hosted two interactive arts and crafts workshops, where families created beautiful paper roses inspired by our upcoming Beauty and the Beast pantomime at Westlands Entertainment Venue. Alongside these creative activities, we shared information about our weekly classes, accessibility schemes and upcoming performances. These events provided a valuable opportunity to build relationships, spark imagination and showcase inclusive initiatives that support wellbeing and community connection. We were truly inspired by the many incredible organisations and groups present at both events, each contributing to a spirit of celebration, togetherness, and community pride.
“I didn’t know you offered a buddy scheme – I know someone this will be perfect for. I am so pleased I came today and talked to you!” Community Member
Participation Figures Continue to Grow
This September we recorded an impressive 751 participations, with 1,610 individuals taking part in at least one of the 23 weekly participation classes on offer at Westlands Entertainment Venue. Following the summer holidays, all 23 of our weekly participation classes are back up and running, welcoming back participants and gearing up for the term ahead. Striving to cater to all ages and interests, the academy offers everything from energetic sessions for pre-schoolers to engaging activities for those enjoying retirement—and plenty in-between. Regular favourites such as the Octagon Tappers, Junior & Senior Choir, Line Dancing, Youth Theatre, and Street Dance each bring their own unique sense of community, giving participants the chance to learn new skills, stay active, and most importantly, have fun! With such a strong start to the term, the Octagon Academy continues to grow as a vibrant hub for creativity, movement, and connection. Whether you're looking to try something new or return to a beloved activity, there's a place for you here.
Inspiring Teachers, Transforming Classrooms
Our Performing Arts CPD event brought together 32 teachers from secondary, primary, and post-16 educational settings for a dynamic day of workshops led by expert practitioners. Educators participated in three sessions delivered by renowned companies: Motionhouse Dance, Frantic Assembly, Emma Rice Company and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, designed to equip them with practical techniques and strategies for use in their classrooms.
The aim of the CPD event was to inspire and motivate teachers, offering tangible approaches to creative education while fostering opportunities to network and build professional relationships. We were also privileged to welcome keynote speakers from the University of the West of England and The Cultural Education Network, who shared valuable insights on how educators can be supported in championing creative education within their schools. Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, with 100% of participants reporting that they felt inspired to bring new ideas into their teaching practice. One teacher shared:
“It was so good to be alongside other like-minded practitioners and be a student for once - I am really excited to try these techniques out with my Year 10s first thing tomorrow morning!” Teacher
Making the Case for Creative Education
This month we launched a new project working with the University of the West of England (UWE) to support the evaluation of our Creative Learning & Education programme with primary and secondary schools in Somerset. The project was launched at the Performing Arts CPD event, and presented to educators by Dr Tim Clark and Professor Jane Andrews. The research project aims to provide an evidence base on which we can highlight the impact of the programme delivery in schools and value of creative education.
Katherine Beverley, Arts Engagement & Outreach Manager, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with UWE on this project. Not only will it provide an evidence base for which we can advocate for creative education in local schools and strengthen the case for creative subjects to remain on the curriculum and to be better resourced. We are also excited by the opportunity of organisational development in working with a higher education establishment and the learnings we will gain from the project.”
Kerry Ellis Inspires Future Stars
Our Audition Technique for Singing workshop gave 5 aspiring performers the chance to refine their audition skills with expert guidance from Anthony Kosky and West End star, Kerry Ellis. The session focused on building confidence, enhancing vocal delivery, and developing stage presence, while offering valuable insights into how to make a lasting impression in auditions. Participants received tailored feedback to support their growth as singers and performers. Kerry shared her wealth of experience from an acclaimed career in productions such as Wicked, We Will Rock You and My Fair Lady. In conversation, she offered practical advice on preparation, mindset, and the importance of bringing individuality to every audition.
“This workshop gave me practical tools and confidence for auditioning. The insights on preparation and mindset has directly supported my journey as a singer. I left feeling empowered and ready to take the next step.” Participant
Creating Opportunities for Everyone to SHiNE
We’re delighted to share that 14 individuals are currently benefiting from our SHiNE Bursary Fund. This initiative supports people of all ages to participate in creative workshops at Westlands, designed for those who might not otherwise have the opportunity due to financial barriers. Our goal is to ensure that everyone in our community can access opportunities to be creative. Participants can choose from a wide range of classes, from vibrant Octagon Street Dance to joyful singing with The Octagon Choir, there is something for everyone. Creative arts have a remarkable way of lighting up lives, boosting confidence, nurturing connection, and lifting spirits. We see these positive changes happening every day through our SHiNE Bursary participants, and we feel privileged to be part of their journey.
“The support that The Octagon Theatre & Westlands Entertainment Venue have been able to give my son through attending holiday activities and now weekly classes has made such a difference. He feels comfortable going into the venue and has a sense of belonging and being valued. He has his spark back.” Parent

Local Talent in the Spotlight
Our popular Piano Nights and Acoustic Afternoons at Westlands continue to create a welcoming space for audiences to enjoy live music in an intimate and relaxed setting. Across the programme, we host 20 sessions that provide valuable performance opportunities for artists. Audience feedback has highlighted the enjoyment of the variety and styles on offer, reinforcing the importance of these events in supporting both musicians and music lovers.

Sharing Health and Wellbeing Opportunities in the Community
Last month, we were proud to support Abri Housing Associations Opportunity Hub at Birchfield Community Centre, a valuable event dedicated to supporting health and wellbeing of Abri residents. The afternoon welcomed residents to discover a wide range of services and support groups available in their area, fostering awareness, connection, and community care. We enjoyed showcasing our creative health and wellbeing programmes, support schemes and accessibility initiatives to attendees and fellow organisations. These conversations helped to open doors and raise awareness of opportunities that reduce isolation, encourage participation, and enhance emotional, physical and social wellbeing. For many residents, it was their first introduction to our work and a chance to see how creativity can bring people together in meaningful and uplifting ways, while also supporting overall health and wellbeing.
‘I didn’t know you did all this. This class will be just what I need. And I didn’t know you had tickets for £3 [on the Accessible Ticket scheme]—I used to love going to the theatre, it always made me feel happier, but I can’t go much because of the cost. I might be able to go more again now!” Community Member
