Huw Lawford - The Mandela Revolution

undefined

Huw Lawford was a member of a small military team sent to South Africa following the election of President Mandela in 1994. Their mission was to prevent a civil war by assisting with the fundamental restructuring of the South African military. To turn the predominantly white armed forces into a new, integrated force that reflected the racial composition of the country. To take a force that represented a threat to the majority of its citizens and replace it with one that provided security to all. The political directive was to integrate the irregular armed wings of the ANC and PAC with the regular South African Defence Force. This was the equivalent, as a consequence of the Good Friday Agreement, of the British Army integrating with the IRA.

It is a story of creating success out of failure, of ensuring political necessity is above perceived military need and about a small team learning how to survive, to cope with institutional resentment, and, ultimately, influence all those around them to put the past behind them and look to the future. Huw retired from the Army in 2014, he now works as a consultant developing high-level training exercises for NATO.
